First Reliance Bank a Leader in Hurricane Relief Efforts

January 12, 2006

Florence, SC Recognizing a local need in the communities we serve, First Reliance Bank became a lead contributor to the Clara Barton Campaign in 2005. First Reliance Bank generated an overwhelming response to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in the Pee Dee region. In December 2005, First Reliance Bank presented The Pee Dee Chapter of the American Red Cross with a check in the amount of $32,566.77. President and CEO Rick Saunders, "This check was presented on behalf of our 130 plus employees and the countless others who have donated to this cause. Our success in this effort, much like our bank's success, is due largely to our customers sharing our vision."

In early September 2005, a partnership was announced between First Reliance Bank and the American Red Cross. The bank's initial intent was to donate $5,000 to kick off the Clara Barton Campaign. It also pledged to match contributions of its customers and employees to no less than another $5,000. Saunders said, "We are proud to be the lead contributor to the Clara Barton Campaign this year. Our contribution came primarily from the use statewide of our free coin machines. We have hosted dozens of schools across the state that raised funds and gave personally. This hurricane season was considered one of the worst our country has faced. Being able to present this check to help victims is just one way we can help in this time of need."

First Reliance Bank's campaign involved several unique ways to solicit contributions. Through the bank's LED color video board, the community became aware of its campaign. Local school children made donations using the bank's free coin machines. As well as having their donations matched by the bank, the children received a short history of the American Red Cross and the effect of giving on the community. First Reliance Bank Mortgage Division gave a significant portion of the fees associated with each mortgage to the American Red Cross.

As a final note, Saunders added, "Making a difference in the community has always been important to our bank. We believe that it is important to do good, while we are doing well."
